    FERPA

Effective May 28, 2009 UConn is implementing a new FERPA privacy waiver.  FERPA is a federal law that stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.  It prohibits universities from discussing students’ records with anyone but the student unless the student grants permission.  The University has developed this online waiver to permit students to designate one or more people by assigning each of them a 4-digit access code.  The waiver also lets the student decide what kind of information can be disclosed to others.

NOTE:  The FERPA Waiver is not the same as designating an Authorized User in e-Billing.  The FERPA Waiver is a separate transaction that permits UConn to disclose information to others such as academic records, financial aid, housing and other information.

The first time students login to the PeopleSoft Student Center they will be prompted to make a decision.  Students may grant UConn employees permission to speak with a third party such as a parent, spouse or other person and assign them access codes.  Alternatively, students may indicate that they do not want us to speak with anyone.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please see our FERPA website at http://www.registrar.uconn.edu/ferpa.html.
