Top 10 Things for Undergrad Students to Remember for Fall 2008

Dear Student,

As the Fall 2008 semester approaches, the Office of the Bursar wishes to remind all undergraduate students and parents about these ten important items to help your arrival at UConn go smoothly.

1. Be sure your fee bill is settled by August 1, 2008. Unsettled fee bills can result in a late fee and an account "hold" that prevents you from moving into university housing, registering for classes, using the recreation center and other services. Your fee bill is considered settled if you have paid it in full or if your balance will be covered by one or more of the following conditions: 1) you are paying through UConn's new installment payment plan and are current; 2) You've been granted a deferment for an outside scholarship; 3) You have completely finished the financial aid process with the UConn financial aid office. Incomplete financial aid is not considered settled.

2. The fee bill mailed to you in late June will be the only paper statement you receive. All follow-up bills are in the form of e-statements that are e-mailed to your HuskyMail account. Students should check their e-mail accounts often. At UConn, your e-mail = your business.

3. Credit card payments are accepted online only and a 2.5% convenience fee applies. If you desire an online alternative, you may pay by e-check for a flat $5 fee. Both payment methods can be accessed by logging into your PeopleSoft Student Administration account at https://student.studentadmin.uconn.edu under the "Make a Payment" menu.
Credit card payments are not taken at the cashiers windows or by telephone.

4. Definitions of the various fees may be found under the "Did you Know?" section of the Bursar's website at http://www.bursar.uconn.edu.

5. It is strongly recommended that you review your online fee bill a few days before arriving on campus to ensure your account is in order. Just login to your PeopleSoft student account and navigate to the menu item entitled "View Fee Bill by Semester."

6. Don't forget to waive the health insurance charge if you have your own private health insurance. Waiving the charge decreases your fall fee bill by $1,150 for most students. You may complete the waiver by logging into your student account and navigating to "UC Health Insurance Waiver." Don't forget to print out or write down your waiver confirmation number.

7. Due to federal regulations, if you want your financial aid to pay ALL your UConn charges you must grant us permission through a "Title IV Waiver."  Otherwise, certain kinds of charges may remain on your account resulting in a hold. If you've never done this waiver you may do so by logging into your student account and navigating to "Title IV Financial Aid Waiver." If you completed the waiver in a previous semester you do not need to do it again.

8. Refund checks cannot be handed out until the first day of classes. Lines for refund checks at the start of each semester are very long so if you can afford to wait a few days you may want to do so. Also, before coming to the Bursar's Office, be sure to login to your student account to make sure your check has been written. Your check is ready when it appears in the "Refunds" section of your online fee bill account and will be available for pick-up at your campus Bursar's Office. Refund checks for excess financial aid will be written automatically but only after your financial aid has actually paid out to your account. If you have a credit balance that is not based on federal financial aid, you should go to the Bursar's website and proceed to the "Avoid Lines" menu and select "Request a Refund Check."

9. If you are expecting a private scholarship that has not yet been received by UConn, you may request a deferment on-line by going to the Bursar's website.

10. Lastly, please know that both the Bursar's Office and the Financial Aid Office experience extraordinarily high phone traffic during the months of July and August. We request your patience during these periods. Also, don't forget that most questions can be answered by viewing your account online through the PeopleSoft Student Administration System or by going to either http://www.bursar.uconn.edu or http://www.financialaid.uconn.edu.

Have a great rest of the summer and we look forward to seeing you this fall!

E-checks are now transacted in your PeopleSoft account

As of May 29, 2007, active and enrolled students will no longer utilize the Bursar's website to make e-check payments.  E-check payments are now transacted directly through the PeopleSoft Student Administration System. Students may simply login and proceed to SA Self Service > Learner Services > Finances> Make a Payment and then click the "Pay by Electronic Check" button.  Please follow the directions and read the terms and conditions carefully when making any electronic payment.

Inactive/former students who cannot login to PeopleSoft may still pay by e-check by going to www.bursar.uconn.edu/html/pay_by_echeck.html.

Important Change Regarding Credit Card Payments

On February 21, 2006 the University of Connecticut instituted important changes that affect the use of credit cards to pay university fee bill charges. There are two aspects to this change, one procedural and the other a policy change.

First, no longer utilize the Bursar's Office website to make credit card payments.  Instead, credit card payments will be transacted directly through the PeopleSoft Student Administration System. Students may simply login and proceed to the Finances section of their PeopleSoft account. Although there are many benefits to this, the primary one is that payments will be immediately reflected on your on-line fee bill. Previously, 2 to 3 business days elapsed before your bill was credited.

Secondly, the university will accept credit card payments via the Internet only. Credit card payments will no longer be taken at the cashiers windows or by telephone. This policy applies to the Storrs and regional campuses. On-line payments may be made from any computer with an Internet connection. Additionally, payment kiosks will be available at the Regional Campus business offices and at the Wilbur Cross building at Storrs.

Just as before, a 2.5% convenience fee will apply to on-line credit card payments for most students. This convenience fee is required to offset the considerable expense incurred by the university for offering the credit card payment option. If you desire an online alternative, you may pay by e-check for a flat $5 fee. Both payment methods can be accessed by logging into your PeopleSoft Student Administration account at https://student.studentadmin.uconn.edu.  Please follow the directions and read the terms and conditions carefully when making any electronic payment.

The university continues to try and balance the high cost of offering credit card payments with the convenience that our students and families desire. It is our hope that these changes will achieve that goal.

Announcing Student Self Service to Financial Aid Payments

The Office of Student Financial Aid Services (OSFAS) is pleased to announce the availability of student self service functionality through the Student Administration System (SA System) for continuing students.

Students sign into the Student Administration System at http://www.studentadmin.uconn.edu and then navigate to SA Self Service > Learner Services > Finances > View My Financial Aid.

It's that easy!

Some actions students can take include:

  • Check their financial aid status

  • Accept or decline their awards

  • Enter anticipated credits per semester

  • Check for required forms or documents

  • Enter outside awards

Students may check their information via SA Self Service at any time.

However, the OSFAS will notify students via HuskyMail to log into the SA System if any action is required on their part.

Note:  Self Service is not available at this time to students in the Schools of Law and Social Work.  Newly entering students will be notified in May of the ability to conduct financial aid business via SA Self Service.

To view this latest addition to Student Self Service, access the online help system at http://www.peoplesofthelp.uconn.edu/studentindex.html and click View My Financial Aid.
