- A Federal Perkins Loan is a low interest loan (currently 5%) that is awarded to students with exceptional financial need. The University of Connecticut acts as the lender for this campus-based program. These funds are not a grant but rather are monies that must be repaid.

Your account must be activated when your enrollment status drops below halftime or you exit the University, therefore you should contact the Federal Loan Office at (860) 486-4835 if you withdraw from school, transfer to another school, or are enrolled for less than half-time study.
Accounts activated prior to June 1, 2004 are due quarterly (four times a year) with minimum payments of $120.00. Accounts activated after June 1, 2004 are due monthly with minimum payment of $40.00. All accounts receive a nine-month grace period from the initial activation date, with the first payment becoming due three months thereafter on older accounts, and one month thereafter on newer accounts.
