Forbearance

Forbearance is a temporary postponement of payments. It can be granted for borrowers who are experiencing extenuating circumstances such as financial hardship, poor health, time spent serving in Americorps, time serving during a national military mobilization, etc.

During a forbearance period, interest will continue to accrue; it cannot be capitalized. If the accrued interest remains unpaid at the end of the forbearance period, it will be added to the next regularly scheduled payment. Any future deferments will not be granted until the outstanding interest is paid.  Forbearance can be granted in intervals of up to 12 months for a total of 3 years.

The borrower must provide supporting documentation when applying for forbearance. Failure to do so will result in denial of the forbearance.  Borrowers may apply for forbearance for up to one year at a time. Forbearance may be renewed for a maximum of three years.  It is the borrower's responsibility to request forbearance from the school.
