Refund Methods
What refund methods do you offer? Can I get the refund directly to my bank account?
Yes! We offer eRefunds through Flywire for the quickest way to receive your refund directly to your U.S. bank account. Both students and Authorized Users can enroll for eRefunds.
If you do not enroll for eRefunds, a paper check will be issued and sent to your U.S. mailing address.
Overpayments from debit/credit card payments must be returned to the originating card.
Overpayments from international wire must be returned to the originating bank account.
What is the difference between direct deposit and eRefunds?
Direct deposit was the term used in Student Admin and eRefunds is the term used in Flywire. Otherwise, there is no difference! eRefunds are electronically deposited directly into your bank account within 2 – 3 business days, just like direct deposit.
How do I sign up for eRefunds?
If you are a student, log into your Student Administration account, navigate to the Bursar Services tile, and click “Sign up for eRefunds.” You will be directed to Flywire, where you will then click the eRefunds tab and enroll.
If you are an authorized user, log into your Flywire account. Click on the eRefunds tab and enroll.
Instructions for enrolling can be found on our Knowledge Base.
Note: Only U.S. bank accounts are eligible for eRefunds.
I just enrolled for eRefunds. When will they become effective?
eRefunds are effective immediately.
I was enrolled for direct deposit in Student Admin. Why do I need to sign up again with Flywire?
The Office of the Bursar is changing how we process refunds in an effort to enhance compliance and better serve our students and authorized users.
For privacy reasons, we cannot export your banking information from Student Admin and automatically enroll you for eRefunds in Flywire.
I receive paychecks from UConn directly to my bank account. Do I still need to enroll for eRefunds?
Yes! Office of the Bursar refunds are processed separately from your paychecks.
What should I do if my banking information changes?
You must update your eRefunds information in Flywire. For students, log into Student Admin, navigate to the Bursar Services tile and click on Sign up for eRefunds. Once redirected into Flywire, click on the eRefunds tab and update your account. For Authorized Users, log into your Flywire account and click the eRefunds tab to update your account.
Can I have my refund deposited into someone else’s bank account?
No. You may not use a bank account other than your own for refunds. You are responsible for specifying the correct account and maintaining accurate banking information. Once an eRefund is processed, the University cannot cancel or reverse the transaction.
I’m a parent expecting a refund from my Parent Plus Loan. Can I get the refund directly to my bank account?
Yes! Parents can receive refunds from Parent Plus Loans directly to their bank account if they are an Authorized User when the refund is issued. Authorized Users can enroll for eRefunds through their Flywire account. When enrolling, you will be prompted to enter your zip code and last four digits of your SSN. These must match what is on file for your Parent Plus Loan to receive the funds electronically.
If you are not already an Authorized User, you can request access now and then enroll for eRefunds.
I signed up for eRefunds but want to receive a paper check instead. What do I do?
You must update your eRefunds preference to paper check in Flywire. For students, log into Student Admin, navigate to the Bursar Services tile and click on Sign up for eRefunds. Once redirected into Flywire, click on the eRefunds tab and update your preference. For Authorized Users, log into your Flywire account and click the eRefunds tab to update your preference. Note: Once a refund is successfully processed as an eRefund, it cannot be reissued as a paper check.
Can I pick up my paper check refund at the Bursar’s Office instead of having it mailed?
No. All paper check refunds are sent to your mailing address. For students, this is the mailing address in Student Admin. For Parent Plus Loan refunds, this is the address on the loan application.
I’m an international student and do not have a U.S. bank account or U.S. mailing address. How can I get my refund?
For students who cannot enroll in eRefunds or receive a paper check because they do not have a U.S. bank account or mailing address, we may be able to refund you via international wire. Please contact studentdisbursements@uconn.edu.
Note: Overpayments from an international wire will be returned to the originating bank account.
Refund Communications
I got an email from flywirepayments@vendor.uconn.edu saying I have a refund waiting for me. Is this a scam?
UConn Office of the Bursar processes refunds through Flywire. If you are not enrolled for eRefunds at the time of initiating a refund, Flywire will email you to log in and enroll for eRefunds so you can receive the refund quickly. This email is not a scam. If you would like to be cautious, you can log into your Student Admin account and view your fee bill to confirm a refund was initiated the same day you received the email from Flywire.
I got an email that my refund was discarded. What does that mean?
Refunds are discarded when you are not enrolled for eRefunds and your mailing address is either incomplete or not in the U.S. You need to either enroll for eRefunds if you have a domestic bank account or correct your mailing address in Student Admin to a complete U.S. address. If you do not have a U.S. bank account or mailing address, please contact studentdisbursements@uconn.edu for your options.
I got an email that my eRefund was returned. Why?
eRefunds can be returned for a variety of reasons with the most common being an incorrect bank account. If your eRefund is returned, it will automatically be issued as a paper check and you will be unenrolled for eRefunds. To receive future refunds electronically, you must re-enroll for eRefunds with correct banking information.
Refund Requests
I am expecting a refund from my financial aid. When will it be refunded?
Eligible refunds based off excess financial aid will be automatically refunded within 14 days of the aid disbursing to the fee bill, though typically it is issued within 1 – 3 business days. Refunds off financial aid, including Parent Plus Loans, do not need to be requested.
We strongly encourage enrollment for eRefunds in Flywire to receive funds the quickest.
I am expecting a refund from money that is not financial aid. When will it be refunded?
Refunds based off non-financial aid sources such as personal payments, private scholarships, and third party payments, will be refunded at the end of the Spring semester. If you require the refund sooner, you must submit a request through Student Admin.
We strongly encourage enrollment for eRefunds in Flywire to receive funds the quickest.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds off financial aid, including Parent Plus Loans, do not need to be requested as they are automatically issued as soon as the funds are eligible for refund. All other refunds are processed at the end of the Spring semester.
If you require a refund sooner, log into Student Admin, navigate to the Bursar Services tile, and click on Request a Refund. Note: If you have a No Refund Hold on your account, please review the hold information and take steps to resolve the hold before requesting your refund.
All refunds are subject to review before being processed.
I requested a refund but did not receive it. Why?
There are a few reasons why a refund cannot be processed.
Refunds can only be issued on true credits and not on any anticipated or deferred aid. Please review your fee bill. If you have aid listed in the "Anticipated Deferrals" section, then a refund cannot be processed until the funds are posted under the "Credits" section.
Another common reason is you have a No Refund Hold. Please review your holds and resolve any No Refund Holds before requesting the refund.
Refunds cannot be issued off personal payments (eCheck, personal check) until 10 business days after payment is posted. Please review your fee bill and see if it’s been 10 days since your personal payment was received before requesting a refund.
I’m receiving a Fellowship. What is that and when will I be refunded?
Fellowships are a type of financial aid that require you to take on professional responsibilities in exchange for funding and do not need to be repaid. They are typically awarded to graduate students.
Fellowships are typically disbursed to the fee bill at the beginning of the month and usually are not allowed to apply to charges. Office of the Bursar will automatically refund the fellowship at the start of the month. If you require a refund during an off-cycle, please submit a refund request through Student Admin.
Please note, if a fellowship was removed from your fee bill because you are no longer eligible, you likely will now have a balance that you need to pay back. You can contact One Stop at onestop@uconn.edu or (860) 486-1111 for more information as to why the fellowship was removed.
Refund Troubleshooting
My bank account was closed but I forgot to deactivate my eRefunds. How do I receive my refund?
Once your bank returns the funds, a paper check will automatically be issued and sent to your mailing address on file. You will receive an email notification and can then log back into Flywire and update your banking information for future eRefunds.
I enrolled for eRefunds but got a paper check. Why?
If you had an eRefund returned, you were automatically unenrolled for eRefunds and your refunds will be issued as paper check. You need to re-enroll for eRefunds to receive refunds electronically again.
If you’re an Authorized User and your zip code and/or last four digits of your SSN did not match what is on file for your Parent Plus Loan, the refund was issued as paper check. You must update your eRefund information and ensure the zip code and last four digits of SSN match your Parent Plus Loan file.
My refund was sent as a paper check but I never received it. What do I do?
Please allow at least two weeks to receive your paper check refund. If not received after two weeks, first ensure your mailing address is correct and/or enroll for eRefunds. Then contact studentdisbursements@uconn.edu to have your refund reissued.
Students can modify their mailing address in Student Admin. Authorized Users receiving a Parent Plus Loan refund can contact One Stop Student Services to update the mailing address associated with the loan.
I was refunded but now owe money to my fee bill. Why?
There are multiple reasons why a refund could be issued but a balance is due on the fee bill. One common reason is the student does not have a Title IV waiver on file which means federal financial aid cannot apply to all charges on the fee bill such as health insurance and the Husky Book Bundle fee. Another common reason is a student dropped a class bringing their fee bill to part-time status, a refund was automatically issued for the reduction in charges, and the student later added a class back causing the fee bill to increase back to full-time rates. One other reason a student may owe after being refunded is financial aid was removed after the refund was issued. Please contact Office of the Bursar for more information on your balance.
I still have questions. Who can I contact?
